LED Signs
The LED in LED Signs stands for Light Emitting Diodes. They are essentially tiny LED light bulbs that are manufactured and installed on a board side by side. The size and distance of these LED Sign Bulbs determines the clarity and viewing distance of your LED Sign. Different types of LED Signs
You have both indoor led signs and outdoor led signs. With both your first option you need to decide on is COLOR. The options are:
- Full Color
- Monochrome
- Tri-Color
Full Color Led Board:
Most indoor-full color led signs can put together an impressive mix of about 4 Trillion colors. While outdoor full color led board are closer to about 68 billion colors. It’s enough really and they really do run the gambit. Not all full-color boards are made alike. Just because you can have trillions of colors in your led sign, doesn’t mean it will run video and the like. Make sure you get the proper MM (millimeter) and pixel spacing along with the proper technology to do all that you wish to do with you full color led board.
Monochrome:
Monochrome LED signs are not what you’d think of as Monochrome which is usually blacks and greys. Monochrome in LED Sign Speak means shades of reds and ambers. This type of of board is the most economical and can still give you give than 4 thousand different shades of red and amber and had tone of multi-media type of effects. Again, different sizes and Millimeter are necessary depending on your audience and viewing distances, but these types of boards are a good option.
Tri-Color
These led signs offer text in three colors: Red, Green and Yellow. They are highly legible due to this high contrast and can be ordered in any number of sizes to allow for one, two, six or ten lines of text which can be customized to be 3″ tall or 14″ tall (for example). The options and variations of the colors, lines and text size are fairly limitless – but you only have the three colors to choose from. These are popular for indoor LED signs, scrolling led message centers and even outdoor led signs.
What else do I need to know?
Well, now you know the size of the LED (light emitting diode) is referred to as MM (millimeter). 20 MM is the most popular size, but you can get 8MM, 16MM, 20MM, 32MM, 64MM…so forth and so on. The smaller the MM the more precise and clear the image will be on the board from closer up. But not all boards are made alike. If you’re comparing quotes you’ll want to know about color, millimeter size and last but definitely not lease is the MATRIX size of the board – the number of pixels high by the number of pixels wide.
You can compare the overall dimensions (the exterior cabinet size of the LED Board), but if you know know how the Matrix is laid out you can be had very easily.
For example:
Take a 4 foot by 8 foot sign. A high quality board should have 64 x 128 pixels. If you get a quote with 56 x 112 pixels, than the LED screen is smaller even though the overall size may very well be larger. These means you’ll have a lot of black cabinet space around your led viewing area. You need to pay for screen size, not cabinet size.
What do these LED Signs really cost?
As a prominent sign company in the US we have lots of suppliers that we can order from and I can’t tell you how many clients say “Well I found it on the Internet for XYZ, that were way cheaper that your price!” I can only say that you pay for what you get and if you choose to order a cut-rate LED board from overseas somewhere you will have a very hard time getting it fixed when it breaks, but you have to work within your budget. Just remember this is an investment into your business and needs to be treated as such as much as possible. A high quality board will not only have a year warranty (with the option to upgrade your parts warranty to at least five years) it will have about a 100,000 hours of life. Meaning you should be able to run the board for 100,000 hours. A smallish monochrome board, around 3′ x 5′, can run you between 3-8 thousand per set depending on the Matrix and Millimeter size. Two big full color boards could cost upwards of 60 thousand. But there are a ton of options in between that can fit most budgets and signage needs.
